Reputable offers to work from the comfort of your own home can be hard to ferret out, however, for those of us with a chronic illness, a work-from-home job may be our last option.

The Fibromyalgia Community went on a quest for reputable companies that allow you to work from home, and in some cases, allow you to set your own hours. The below listings have no complaints by the BBB or any other source we could find. The amount of money you can make depends largely on your skill and/or participation level.

With that said, let's list some of the red flags that should alert you to a scam:

Contact - Ignore companies that send spam with promising offers. Legitimate businesses will not send mass emailings to garner employees.

Money - Legitimate companies will NOT ask for a filing fee, credit card information or money to send you further information.
They will not ask for money or a credit card number to send you materials to get you started or ask for bank account and social security numbers.
(There are a few exceptions to this, such as Mary Kay Cosmetics who requires that you purchase an initial kit for start up)

If it sounds too good to be true, it is! If people could make thousands of dollars a week stuffing envelopes, everyone would be doing it by now. Let your instinct be your guide and check all businesses with the Better Business Bureau and other sources before becoming involved. ABC News bought starter kits from 10 different envelope stuffing Web sites, every single offer was a scam!

Fill out Surveys:

TamingtheBeast.net: Evaluate products and services for a multitude of companies. The site updates their survey lists daily.

Product Testing:

ContractTesting: Get paid to evaluate everything from toothpaste to cleaning supplies. They are searching for ways to improve their products, packaging and advertising.

Medical Transcription: Convert a doctors recorded report into electronic patient files.

Take Orders:

Acddirect.com Take phone orders for catelogue mailers and other retailers from the comfort of your own home.

Online Experts:

BeAGuide.About.com If you are knowledgable in a certain area, and you are a decent writer you can make up to $700 a month on About.com. Go to their website to see what areas of expertise are still looking for contributors.

Google:

Google is always looking for people to help them improve their services.

Office Skills:

VirtualAssistantJobs: Work as a typist, handle billing and travel arrangements or be an "off-site assistant all with a home computer and phone.

Tutoring:
Help students with study habits, homework, test taking skills and more by offering your knowledge and time.
